Small Fiber Neuropathy (SFN) is a medical condition that affects the small nerve fibers in the body. Our nervous system consists of large and small nerve fibers, each serving distinct functions. SFN specifically impacts the small fiber A delta and C-unmyelinated nerve fibers, which are crucial for pain sensation, temperature regulation, and various sensory and autonomic functions.
A significant finding in SFN is that these small fiber nerves play a vital role in controlling the dilation of blood vessels. When these nerve fibers are damaged, it can lead to malfunctioning blood vessels, affecting overall blood flow and organ function. This can result in symptoms such as chronic pain, abnormal sweating, and gastrointestinal issues.
One of the primary reasons for creating this site is to provide comprehensive information that can help individuals suffering from SFN achieve a confirmatory diagnosis more swiftly, avoiding years of uncertainty.
This site offers curated informational links on SFN and related conditions such as Erythromelalgia, Cramp Fasciculation Syndrome, Lyme Disease, Long Covid, Mold Illness (CIRS), CFS/ME, Fibromyalgia, and many others. Our layout is designed to allow you to access the information you need quickly and efficiently. While we will continue to expand our resources over time, our goal remains to keep information simple, quick, and easy to understand.
Below, are listed out several 'known' causes of SFN along with 'suspected' causes. Many cases, however, are idiopathic or cryptogenic in nature meaning the cause is not yet known.
Part of my intention for creating this site is to help people avoid the long wait to get from first symptoms to diagnosis, and to help others avoid the amount of suffering that I had to endure in order for the health problems I had to be recognized officially. I want others to know that they are not alone.
